The 1911 Census recorded 719 people named Robertson in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,100 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 344 men and 372 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

The average Robertson in 1911 was 30.1 years old, 30.6 for men and 29.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Robertson literacy in 1911
Of the Robertsons whose literacy was recorded, 87.7% could both read and write, 2.2% could read but not write, and 9.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 89.1% reading and writing against 86.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (41), John, William, George and Robert. For women it was Mary (21), followed by Margaret, Annie, Elizabeth and Agnes.

The most common entry on a Robertson's census form was "Scholar"; 18.1% (130) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were metal worker / engineer (5.4%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.3%), clerk / office worker (3.3%) and domestic servant (2.5%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 7.4% of all Robertsons, followed by metal & engineering, domestic service and agriculture.
What religion is Robertson?
The largest religious group among Robertsons was Presbyterian, at 44.6%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (27.3%), Roman Catholic (11.4%), Methodist (8.5%) and Congregationalist (2.2%).
