The 1911 Census recorded 391 people named Rose in Ireland; roughly one in every 11,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 202 men and 187 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Rose in Ireland
Cork had the largest share of Roses, 16.1% (63 people). Next came Dublin (60), Carlow (56), Donegal (50) and Limerick (27).
Rose average age in 1911
The average Rose in 1911 was 26.5 years old, 26.0 for men and 27.0 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Rose literacy in 1911
Of the Roses whose literacy was recorded, 78.7% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 17.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 81.7% reading and writing against 75.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Rose common first names
The most common male names were William (21), John, Henry, Patrick and George. For women it was Mary (21), followed by Elizabeth, Margaret, Annie and Ellen.
Rose occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Rose's census form was "Scholar"; 21.7% (85) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.7%), farm labourer (2.8%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.6%) and domestic servant (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.8% of all Roses, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and metal & engineering.
What religion is Rose?
The largest religious group among Roses was Roman Catholic, at 48.3%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (43.5%), Presbyterian (3.1%), Methodist (1.3%) and Non-Conformist (1.3%).
