The 1911 Census recorded 213 people named Rushe in Ireland; roughly one in every 21,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 105 men and 107 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The average Rushe in 1911 was 33.1 years old, 33.0 for men and 33.2 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Rushe literacy in 1911
Of the Rushes whose literacy was recorded, 72.7% could both read and write, 8.1% could read but not write, and 19.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (20), John, Michael, Thomas and Martin. For women it was Mary (13), followed by Bridget, Kate, Margaret and Annie.

The most common occupation among Rushes was farmer, 23.5% of them (50 people). Next came scholar / student (17.4%), general labourer (5.6%), textile worker (3.3%) and farm labourer (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.2% of all Rushes, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Rushe?
Rushes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.5%).
