Rutledge literacy in 1911
Of the Rutledges whose literacy was recorded, 81.6% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 15% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82.7% reading and writing against 80.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.3%), general labourer (3.3%), farm labourer (2.3%) and domestic servant (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.9% of all Rutledges, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

The largest religious group among Rutledges was Roman Catholic, at 39.3%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (37.4%), Methodist (13.1%), Presbyterian (8.6%) and Protestant (0.5%).
