Ryans literacy in 1911
Of the Ryanses whose literacy was recorded, 72.6% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 23.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 75% reading and writing against 70.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among Ryanses was farmer, 23.9% of them (21 people). Next came textile worker (17%), scholar / student (11.4%), general labourer (4.5%) and seamstress (4.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.3% of all Ryanses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

Most Ryanses, 55.7%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (42%) and Presbyterian (1.1%).
