Men came out slightly ahead, 77.8% reading and writing against 62.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.6% of all Saweys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.

Saweys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.7%).
