The average Scallon in 1911 was 40.3 years old, 39.2 for men and 41.8 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Scallon literacy in 1911
Of the Scallons whose literacy was recorded, 78.6% could both read and write, 2.9% could read but not write, and 18.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.9% reading and writing against 72.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Edward (5), George, James, John and Nicholas. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Ellen and Sarah.

The most common occupation among Scallons was farmer, 23.9% of them (17 people). Next came scholar / student (11.3%), farm labourer (8.5%), general labourer (7%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 33.8% of all Scallons, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.

Scallons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.8%).
