The 1911 Census recorded 816 people named Scullion in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,400 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 401 men and 414 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was Scullion country: 49.9% of them (407 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Derry (286), Armagh (59), Tyrone (33) and Down (26).

The average Scullion in 1911 was 31.7 years old, 29.6 for men and 33.8 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Scullion literacy in 1911
Of the Scullions whose literacy was recorded, 64.8% could both read and write, 9.5% could read but not write, and 25.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 68.4% reading and writing against 61% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Scullion common first names
The most common male names were James (56), John, Patrick, Henry and Daniel. For women it was Mary (58), followed by Ellen, Sarah, Maggie and Margaret.
Scullion occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Scullion's census form was "Scholar"; 19.4% (158) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.2%), textile worker (9.7%), farm labourer (6%) and general labourer (5.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.8% of all Scullions, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Scullion?
Scullions were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.1%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (7%), Anglican (4%), Non-Conformist (0.6%) and Methodist (0.2%).
