The 1911 Census recorded 637 people named Shanks in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,900 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 295 men and 340 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Down was Shanks country: 44.3% of them (282 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (213), Armagh (63), Dublin (58) and Leitrim (7).

The average Shanks in 1911 was 30.1 years old, 29.4 for men and 30.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Shanks literacy in 1911
Of the Shankses whose literacy was recorded, 82.5% could both read and write, 3.1% could read but not write, and 14.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 84.2% reading and writing against 80.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (33), John, William, Robert and Hugh. For women it was Mary (33), followed by Elizabeth, Margaret, Sarah and Jane.
Shanks occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Shanks's census form was "Scholar"; 17.7% (113) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (7.4%), farmer (6.9%), general labourer (4.4%) and other maker / factory worker (2.7%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 11% of all Shankses, followed by agriculture, general labourers and building & construction.
What religion is Shanks?
Most Shankses, 53.2%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (31.2%), Roman Catholic (8.2%), Methodist (3.6%) and Unitarian (1.6%).
