The 1911 Census recorded 3,318 people named Shannon in Ireland, about 0.076% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 266th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,675 men and 1,640 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim had the largest share of Shannons, 13.7% (455 people). Next came Clare (386), Down (309), Cork (297) and Dublin (279).

The average Shannon in 1911 was 29.7 years old, 28.9 for men and 30.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Shannons whose literacy was recorded, 79.3% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 17% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.3% reading and writing against 78.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (221), James, Thomas, Patrick and William. For women it was Mary (235), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Elizabeth and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Shannon's census form was "Scholar"; 20.2% (671) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.7%), general labourer (3.5%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%) and farm labourer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.6% of all Shannons, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.

What religion is Shannon?

Most Shannons, 61.8%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (17.2%), Presbyterian (16%), Methodist (2.3%) and Quaker (0.5%).
