The 1911 Census recorded 620 people named Sheil in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,100 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 289 men and 331 women.

Dublin had the largest share of Sheils, 19.8% (123 people). Next came Wexford (112), Mayo (45), Westmeath (45) and Offaly (36).

The average Sheil in 1911 was 30.6 years old, 30.0 for men and 31.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Sheils whose literacy was recorded, 83.6% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 12.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (43), John, Patrick, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (50), followed by Bridget, Anne, Margaret and Annie.

The most common occupation among Sheils was farmer, 20% of them (124 people). Next came scholar / student (19.2%), farm labourer (4.5%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.7%) and domestic servant (1.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.8% of all Sheils, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Sheil?
Sheils were predominantly Roman Catholic (89%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (9.2%) and Non-Conformist (0.8%).
