The 1911 Census recorded 192 people named Sheilds in Ireland; roughly one in every 23,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 96 men and 96 women.

Down had the largest share of Sheildses, 21.4% (41 people). Next came Antrim (32), Cavan (28), Louth (21) and Donegal (14).

The average Sheilds in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 28.7 for men and 32.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Sheilds literacy in 1911
Of the Sheildses whose literacy was recorded, 72.7% could both read and write, 7.1% could read but not write, and 20.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (13), Patrick, John, Thomas and Hugh. For women it was Mary (12), followed by Kate, Catherine, Elizabeth and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Sheilds's census form was "Scholar"; 15.6% (30) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.4%), general labourer (8.3%), textile worker (4.7%) and farm labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13% of all Sheildses, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Sheilds?
Most Sheildses, 68.2%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (15.6%), Presbyterian (14.6%) and Unitarian (1.6%).
