That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Sherwins whose literacy was recorded, 84.6% could both read and write, 0.6% could read but not write, and 13.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 86.5% reading and writing against 82.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (12), Patrick, Joseph, James and William. For women it was Mary (12), followed by Catherine, Ellen, Margaret and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Sherwin's census form was "Scholar"; 17.1% (27) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.8%), general labourer (7%), domestic servant (3.2%) and mason / bricklayer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.6% of all Sherwins, followed by domestic service, general labourers and building & construction.

Sherwins were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.6%).
