Shortall in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 451 people named Shortall in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,700 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 227 men and 223 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Shortall country: 29.9% of them (135 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Kilkenny (109), Laois (85), Tipperary (31) and Kildare (14).

The average Shortall in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 27.9 for men and 31.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Shortall literacy in 1911
Of the Shortalls whose literacy was recorded, 81.9% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 14.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Shortall common first names
The most common male names were Thomas (27), Patrick, John, Michael and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (41), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Annie and Catherine.
Shortall occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Shortall's census form was "Scholar"; 21.1% (95) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.5%), general labourer (3.5%), domestic servant (2%) and farm labourer (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.5% of all Shortalls, followed by domestic service, general labourers and building & construction.
What religion is Shortall?
Shortalls were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.4%).
