The 1911 Census recorded 305 people named Shortt in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 170 women to 135 men.

Dublin was Shortt country: 25.2% of them (77 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (36), Tipperary (36), Antrim (34) and Armagh (23).

The average Shortt in 1911 was 28.2 years old, 28.0 for men and 28.4 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Shortt literacy in 1911
Of the Shortts whose literacy was recorded, 83.3% could both read and write, 2% could read but not write, and 14.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 84.8% reading and writing against 82% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Shortt common first names
The most common male names were James (19), John, Patrick, Edward and Thomas. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Catherine, Bridget, Elizabeth and Annie.
Shortt occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Shortt's census form was "Scholar"; 14.8% (45) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.8%), general labourer (5.2%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.6%) and textile worker (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.1% of all Shortts, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Shortt?
Most Shortts, 67.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (21.3%), Presbyterian (6.9%), Congregationalist (1.3%) and Methodist (1%).
