The 1911 Census recorded 91 people named Silk in Ireland; roughly one in every 48,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 49 men and 42 women.

The Silks were heavily concentrated in Galway, home to 73.6% of them (67 people). Next came Kilkenny (6), Cork (5), Roscommon (3) and Carlow (2).

The average Silk in 1911 was 34.3 years old, 33.7 for men and 35.0 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Silk literacy in 1911
Of the Silks whose literacy was recorded, 78.8% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 21.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.6% reading and writing against 73.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Silk common first names
The most common male names were Thomas (10), John, James, Patrick and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (6), followed by Mary, Ellen, Margaret and Annie; matching the national top five exactly.
Silk occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Silks was farmer, 31.9% of them (29 people). Next came scholar / student (12.1%), domestic servant (4.4%), farm labourer (3.3%) and dressmaker / milliner (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 36.3% of all Silks, followed by domestic service, manufacturing & trades and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Silk?
Silks were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.4%).
