Men came out slightly ahead, 96% reading and writing against 84.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (6.3%), clerk / office worker (4.8%), farmer (4.8%) and soldier / military (3.2%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 9.5% of all Simmondses, followed by agriculture, textiles & clothing and clerical & administration.

Most Simmondses, 63.5%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (23.8%), Methodist (4.8%), Presbyterian (3.2%) and Non-Conformist (1.6%).
