The 1911 Census recorded 295 people named Simmons in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 137 men and 155 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of Simmonses, 21.4% (63 people). Next came Armagh (31), Antrim (28), Tyrone (24) and Cork (20).

The average Simmons in 1911 was 29.6 years old, 29.1 for men and 30.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Simmons literacy in 1911
Of the Simmonses whose literacy was recorded, 79.7% could both read and write, 7.7% could read but not write, and 12.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (10), William, James, Richard and Samuel. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Annie, Ellen, Elizabeth and Sarah.

The most common entry on a Simmons's census form was "Scholar"; 19.3% (57) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.2%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.7%), textile worker (3.1%) and general labourer (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.5% of all Simmonses, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Simmons?
Most Simmonses, 61.7%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (26.4%), Presbyterian (9.5%) and Methodist (1.7%).
