The 1911 Census recorded 2,462 people named Slattery in Ireland, about 0.056% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 358th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,170 men and 1,289 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Tipperary was Slattery country: 28.6% of them (703 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Kerry (355), Limerick (301), Clare (264) and Cork (174).

The average Slattery in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 31.3 for men and 29.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Slattery literacy in 1911
Of the Slatterys whose literacy was recorded, 80.1% could both read and write, 2.8% could read but not write, and 17% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Slattery common first names
The most common male names were John (200), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (256), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Kate.
Slattery occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Slattery's census form was "Scholar"; 21.4% (526) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16%), farm labourer (5.2%), domestic servant (3.7%) and general labourer (3.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.8% of all Slatterys, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is Slattery?
Slatterys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.2%) and Anglican (0.1%).
