Slavin in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 270 people named Slavin in Ireland; roughly one in every 16,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 137 men and 133 women.
Counties with Slavin in Ireland
Fermanagh had the largest share of Slavins, 19.3% (52 people). Next came Antrim (49), Donegal (40), Leitrim (31) and Tyrone (23).
Slavin average age in 1911
The average Slavin in 1911 was 29.0 years old, 28.9 for men and 29.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Slavin literacy in 1911
Of the Slavins whose literacy was recorded, 68.7% could both read and write, 7.6% could read but not write, and 22.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 69.9% reading and writing against 67.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Slavin common first names
The most common male names were James (17), John, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (18), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Susan.
Slavin occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Slavin's census form was "Scholar"; 19.6% (53) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.3%), domestic servant (5.9%), general labourer (5.9%) and farm labourer (5.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20% of all Slavins, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Slavin?
Slavins were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.1%) and Presbyterian (2.6%).
