The 1911 Census recorded 1,074 people named Slevin in Ireland, about 0.025% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 741st most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 528 men and 545 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Slevin in Ireland
Tyrone had the largest share of Slevins, 17.6% (189 people). Next came Donegal (169), Dublin (131), Fermanagh (84) and Westmeath (84).

The average Slevin in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 32.2 for men and 29.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Slevin literacy in 1911
Of the Slevins whose literacy was recorded, 78.3% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 16.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 79.7% reading and writing against 77.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (70), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (84), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Anne.

The most common occupation among Slevins was farmer, 20.3% of them (218 people). Next came scholar / student (19%), general labourer (3.4%), farm labourer (3.1%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.1% of all Slevins, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Slevin?
Slevins were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.9%), Non-Conformist (0.1%) and Presbyterian (0.1%).
