The 1911 Census recorded 643 people named Sloane in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,800 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 356 women to 284 men. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Down was Sloane country: 32.8% of them (211 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (101), Dublin (58), Cork (39) and Cavan (31).

The average Sloane in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 28.4 for men and 29.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Sloane literacy in 1911
Of the Sloanes whose literacy was recorded, 81% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 15.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Sloane common first names
The most common male names were John (25), James, Thomas, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (24), followed by Margaret, Annie, Ellen and Catherine.
Sloane occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Sloane's census form was "Scholar"; 18.2% (117) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.5%), farm labourer (3.3%) and textile worker (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.5% of all Sloanes, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Sloane?
Most Sloanes, 50.2%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (23.6%), Presbyterian (21.8%), Plymouth Brethren (1.1%) and Methodist (0.9%).
