The average Southern in 1911 was 25.3 years old, 25.5 for men and 25.0 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Southern literacy in 1911
Of the Southerns whose literacy was recorded, 65.4% could both read and write, 7.7% could read but not write, and 26.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.3% reading and writing against 55.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Southern common first names
The most common male names were Laurence (4), John, Patrick, Thomas and Christopher F. For women it was Mary (5), followed by Sarah, Bridget, Elizabeth and Alicia.
Southern occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Southern's census form was "Scholar"; 15.1% (8) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were carpenter / joiner (5.7%), farm labourer (5.7%), farmer (5.7%) and blacksmith / smith (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.3% of all Southerns, followed by building & construction, domestic service and metal & engineering.
What religion is Southern?
Most Southerns, 58.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (41.5%).
