Spain in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 279 people named Spain in Ireland; roughly one in every 16,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 150 men and 129 women.
Counties with Spain in Ireland
Tipperary was Spain country: 26.5% of them (74 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Dublin (65), Offaly (62), Galway (46) and Antrim (7).
Spain average age in 1911
The average Spain in 1911 was 30.4 years old, 27.9 for men and 33.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Spain literacy in 1911
Of the Spains whose literacy was recorded, 80.3% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82% reading and writing against 78.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Spain common first names
The most common male names were John (30), Michael, Patrick, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Ellen, Julia, Margaret and Bridget.
Spain occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Spain's census form was "Scholar"; 19.4% (54) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.8%), general labourer (5%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.6%) and farm labourer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.7% of all Spains, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Spain?
Spains were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.9%), Jewish (1.4%), Presbyterian (1.1%) and Methodist (0.4%).
