Of the Speerses whose literacy was recorded, 80.7% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 15.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (24), William, Robert, James and Thomas. For women it was Mary (19), followed by Annie, Sarah, Agnes and Jane.

The most common entry on a Speers's census form was "Scholar"; 18.9% (74) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.2%), general labourer (4.3%), textile worker (3.8%) and farm labourer (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.8% of all Speerses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Speers?
Most Speerses, 53.1%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (30.4%), Roman Catholic (5.9%), Baptist (3.3%) and Congregationalist (1.5%).
