The 1911 Census recorded 248 people named Spiers in Ireland; roughly one in every 18,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 127 men and 121 women.

The Spierses were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 83.5% of them (207 people). Next came Antrim (20), Tyrone (8), Armagh (7) and Cork (4).

Of the Spierses whose literacy was recorded, 76.8% could both read and write, 7.1% could read but not write, and 16.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80% reading and writing against 73.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (18), John, Thomas, William and Samuel. For women it was Annie (10), followed by Mary, Sarah, Margaret and Jane.

The most common entry on a Spiers's census form was "Scholar"; 21.4% (53) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.2%), seamstress (4.4%), farm labourer (3.2%) and general labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.6% of all Spierses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Spiers?
Most Spierses, 52.4%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (37.5%), Roman Catholic (4.4%), Non-Conformist (2.8%) and Methodist (2.4%).
