The 1911 Census recorded 96 people named Starrs in Ireland; roughly one in every 46,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 56 women to 40 men.

The Starrses were heavily concentrated in Tyrone, home to 75% of them (72 people). Next came Derry (12), Antrim (9), Down (1) and Fermanagh (1).

The average Starrs in 1911 was 32.7 years old, 36.2 for men and 30.3 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Starrses whose literacy was recorded, 71.4% could both read and write, 2.2% could read but not write, and 26.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.4% reading and writing against 63.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (7), Patrick, James, Bernard and Edward. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Catherine, Bridget, Annie and Maggie.

The most common occupation among Starrses was farmer, 18.8% of them (18 people). Next came scholar / student (14.6%), blacksmith / smith (5.2%), laundress (4.2%) and domestic servant (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.8% of all Starrses, followed by domestic service, metal & engineering and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Starrs?
Starrses were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (8.3%) and Anglican (1%).
