The 1911 Census recorded 365 people named Steen in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 168 men and 197 women.

Antrim had the largest share of Steens, 20.5% (75 people). Next came Tyrone (75), Derry (62), Monaghan (39) and Down (26).

The average Steen in 1911 was 34.2 years old, 31.9 for men and 36.2 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Steen literacy in 1911
Of the Steens whose literacy was recorded, 85.7% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 10% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.6% reading and writing against 84.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Steen common first names
The most common male names were John (21), James, William, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Elizabeth (14), followed by Mary, Margaret, Mary Jane and Annie.
Steen occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Steens was farmer, 17% of them (62 people). Next came scholar / student (15.1%), farm labourer (2.7%), textile worker (2.7%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.3% of all Steens, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Steen?
Most Steens, 61.4%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (26.6%), Roman Catholic (6.8%), Jewish (2.7%) and Methodist (1.6%).
