Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were George (3), Abraham, Louis, Morris and Samuel. For women it was Mary (3), followed by Annie, Caroline, Isabella and Rachel.

The most common entry on a Stein's census form was "Scholar"; 23.9% (16) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (9%), no occupation / dependent (3%), other professional (3%) and teacher (3%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 9% of all Steins, followed by professional, food & drink and no occupation / dependent.
What religion is Stein?
Most Steins, 59.7%, were Jewish. The remainder were mostly Anglican (14.9%), Presbyterian (14.9%) and Roman Catholic (10.4%).
