Women came out slightly ahead, 90.8% reading and writing against 85.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.2%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.6%), domestic servant (2.9%) and textile worker (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.7% of all Stephensons, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Stephenson?
The largest religious group among Stephensons was Anglican, at 39%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (29.8%), Presbyterian (20.2%), Methodist (7.8%) and Quaker (0.5%).
