Strain in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 743 people named Strain in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,900 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 361 men and 379 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Strain in Ireland
Down was Strain country: 38.8% of them (288 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Donegal (188), Antrim (163), Armagh (58) and Dublin (14).

The average Strain in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 29.5 for men and 29.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Strain literacy in 1911
Of the Strains whose literacy was recorded, 73.3% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 22.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Strain common first names
The most common male names were James (44), John, William, David and Robert. For women it was Mary (22), followed by Ellen, Margaret, Lizzie and Sarah.
Strain occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Strain's census form was "Scholar"; 18.2% (135) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.4%), farm labourer (5.7%), textile worker (5.7%) and general labourer (4.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.8% of all Strains, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Strain?
The largest religious group among Strains was Presbyterian, at 44%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (33.6%), Anglican (16.4%), Methodist (2.3%) and Unitarian (2%).
