Strange in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 199 people named Strange in Ireland; roughly one in every 22,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 94 men and 104 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Strange in Ireland
The Stranges were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 74.9% of them (149 people). Next came Down (23), Derry (8), Longford (7) and Dublin (5).
Strange average age in 1911
The average Strange in 1911 was 27.3 years old, 26.4 for men and 28.1 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Strange literacy in 1911
Of the Stranges whose literacy was recorded, 84.1% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 12.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 88.4% reading and writing against 80.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Strange common first names
The most common male names were John (13), William, James, Andrew and Robert. For women it was Jane (10), followed by Mary, Agnes, Maggie and Margaret.
Strange occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Strange's census form was "Scholar"; 26.1% (52) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.1%), textile worker (4%), domestic servant (2.5%) and other maker / factory worker (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.1% of all Stranges, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Strange?
Stranges were predominantly Presbyterian (77.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (7%), Congregationalist (5%), Non-Conformist (3.5%) and Plymouth Brethren (3.5%).
