The Stretches were heavily concentrated in Roscommon, home to 68.4% of them (39 people). Next came Longford (6), Donegal (5), Galway (5) and Dublin (1).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Stretches whose literacy was recorded, 62.5% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 35.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 68.2% reading and writing against 57.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Michael (10), John, Thomas, George and Patrick. For women it was Bridget (6), followed by Lizzie, Margaret, Mary and Annie.

The most common occupation among Stretches was farmer, 26.3% of them (15 people). Next came scholar / student (12.3%), general labourer (5.3%), domestic servant (3.5%) and farm labourer (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28.1% of all Stretches, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retired & pensioners.

Stretches were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.3%).
