Strong in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 351 people named Strong in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 177 men and 172 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Strong in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Strongs, 16.5% (58 people). Next came Donegal (42), Cavan (41), Antrim (32) and Mayo (32).

Strong average age in 1911
The average Strong in 1911 was 31.4 years old, 30.6 for men and 32.3 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Strong literacy in 1911
Of the Strongs whose literacy was recorded, 82.5% could both read and write, 6.1% could read but not write, and 11% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.4% reading and writing against 80.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Strong common first names
The most common male names were John (23), William, James, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Elizabeth (8), followed by Margaret, Catherine, Sarah and Mary.
Strong occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Strong's census form was "Scholar"; 22.2% (78) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.7%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.7%), farm labourer (2.6%) and general labourer (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.2% of all Strongs, followed by retail & commerce, domestic service and transport.

Most Strongs, 58.1%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (22.8%), Methodist (8.8%), Presbyterian (8.8%) and Unitarian (0.3%).
