That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Suffern literacy in 1911
Of the Sufferns whose literacy was recorded, 94.4% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 5.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 100% reading and writing against 88.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Hugh (3), Samuel, James, William and Alexander. For women it was Elizabeth (3), followed by Annie, Jane Eliza, Nettie and Agnes Robina.
Suffern occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Suffern's census form was "Scholar"; 23.6% (13) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.2%), textile worker (5.5%), general labourer (3.6%) and dressmaker / milliner (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.2% of all Sufferns, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is Suffern?
Sufferns were predominantly Presbyterian (76.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (16.4%), Methodist (3.6%) and Plymouth Brethren (3.6%).
