The 1911 Census recorded 951 people named Sutton in Ireland; roughly one in every 4,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 469 men and 480 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of Suttons, 24.1% (229 people). Next came Wexford (199), Wicklow (152), Cork (138) and Waterford (45).

The average Sutton in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 29.0 for men and 29.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Sutton literacy in 1911
Of the Suttons whose literacy was recorded, 83.9% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 13.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.8%), farm labourer (4.3%), general labourer (3.8%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.6% of all Suttons, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is Sutton?
Most Suttons, 66.2%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (28.5%), Methodist (2.2%), Presbyterian (1.5%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.5%).
