Swaine in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 244 people named Swaine in Ireland; roughly one in every 18,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 125 men and 118 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Swaine in Ireland
Wexford was Swaine country: 34.4% of them (84 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Dublin (80), Cork (21), Laois (19) and Antrim (8).

Swaine average age in 1911
The average Swaine in 1911 was 28.0 years old, 27.2 for men and 28.8 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Swaine literacy in 1911
Of the Swaines whose literacy was recorded, 78.1% could both read and write, 3.1% could read but not write, and 18.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 79.3% reading and writing against 76.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9%), general labourer (5.7%), farm labourer (3.7%) and domestic servant (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.1% of all Swaines, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
