Syms in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 52 people named Syms in Ireland; roughly one in every 84,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 26 men and 25 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Symses were heavily concentrated in Dublin, home to 75% of them (39 people). Next came Cork (13).

The average Syms in 1911 was 26.7 years old, 27.3 for men and 26.0 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Syms literacy in 1911
Of the Symses whose literacy was recorded, 76% could both read and write, 4% could read but not write, and 20% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Syms common first names
The most common male names were Stephen (5), William, Thomas, Edwin and James. For women it was Elizabeth (5), followed by Sarah, Annie, Catherine and Eliza.
Syms occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Syms's census form was "Scholar"; 19.2% (10) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were fisherman (9.6%), carpenter / joiner (3.8%), sailor / dock worker (3.8%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, fishing accounted for 9.6% of all Symses, followed by retail & commerce, building & construction and transport.
What religion is Syms?
Symses were predominantly Anglican (75%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (11.5%) and Roman Catholic (11.5%).
