The Taggarts were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 54.4% of them (667 people). Next came Tyrone (191), Down (130), Derry (126) and Armagh (41).

The average Taggart in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 29.7 for men and 30.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Taggarts whose literacy was recorded, 78.2% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 17% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (75), James, William, Robert and Joseph. For women it was Mary (52), followed by Jane, Sarah, Margaret and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Taggart's census form was "Scholar"; 19.2% (236) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13%), general labourer (5.1%), textile worker (4.6%) and farm labourer (4.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.8% of all Taggarts, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

What religion is Taggart?

The largest religious group among Taggarts was Presbyterian, at 38.8%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (29%), Roman Catholic (29%), Methodist (1.1%) and Christadelphian (0.8%).
