That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Michael (4), James, John, Thomas and John J. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Catherine, Elizabeth, Louisa and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Tallant's census form was "Scholar"; 21.5% (17) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were sailor / dock worker (7.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (6.3%), domestic servant (5.1%) and no occupation / dependent (3.8%). Grouped by sector, transport accounted for 10.1% of all Tallants, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and no occupation / dependent.
What religion is Tallant?
Tallants were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.8%).
