The 1911 Census recorded 502 people named Tallon in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,700 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 239 men and 263 women.

Dublin was Tallon country: 34.9% of them (175 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Meath (92), Wicklow (82), Louth (43) and Carlow (16).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Tallon literacy in 1911
Of the Tallons whose literacy was recorded, 82.7% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 15.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (37), Patrick, James, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (41), followed by Anne, Catherine, Bridget and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Tallon's census form was "Scholar"; 21.5% (108) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.2%), general labourer (6%), domestic servant (2.4%) and farm labourer (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10.6% of all Tallons, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.

Tallons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99% of them. The remainder were mostly Non-Conformist (0.4%).
