Talty in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 293 people named Talty in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 145 men and 147 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Taltys were heavily concentrated in Clare, home to 95.2% of them (279 people). Next came Dublin (4), Cavan (3), Galway (3) and Limerick (2).

The average Talty in 1911 was 32.0 years old, 31.1 for men and 32.9 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Talty literacy in 1911
Of the Taltys whose literacy was recorded, 78.9% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 18.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.3% reading and writing against 75.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Michael (26), John, Patrick, Thomas and Hugh. For women it was Mary (31), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Norah and Catherine.
Talty occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Taltys was farmer, 34.1% of them (100 people). Next came scholar / student (17.7%), farm labourer (3.4%), no occupation / dependent (2.4%) and dressmaker / milliner (1.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 37.9% of all Taltys, followed by no occupation / dependent, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
