That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Tansey literacy in 1911
Of the Tanseys whose literacy was recorded, 75.9% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 20.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.2% reading and writing against 73.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (30), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (36), followed by Bridget, Kate, Anne and Margaret.

Next came scholar / student (18.8%), farm labourer (2.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.3%) and general labourer (1.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 32.7% of all Tanseys, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and building & construction.

Tanseys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.5%).
