Women came out slightly ahead, 76.5% reading and writing against 74.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (32), John, Thomas, James and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (32), followed by Bridget, Kate, Delia and Maggie.

Next came scholar / student (24.1%), farm labourer (1.7%), domestic servant (1.1%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (1.1%).
