The 1911 Census recorded 6,414 people named Taylor in Ireland, about 0.146% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 111th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 3,119 men and 3,286 women. (A small number, 9, had no sex recorded.)
Counties and map with Taylor in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Taylors, 22.2% (1,422 people). Next came Down (796), Dublin (790), Derry (436) and Armagh (355).
Taylor average age in 1911
The average Taylor in 1911 was 29.2 years old, 28.5 for men and 29.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Taylor literacy in 1911
Of the Taylors whose literacy was recorded, 81.4% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 15% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Taylor common first names
The most common male names were John (315), James, William, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Mary (283), followed by Margaret, Annie, Elizabeth and Sarah.
Taylor occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Taylor's census form was "Scholar"; 20.5% (1,316) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.9%), textile worker (3.7%), general labourer (3.2%) and farm labourer (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.1% of all Taylors, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Taylor?
The largest religious group among Taylors was Anglican, at 43.3%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (24.6%), Presbyterian (23.9%), Methodist (3.7%) and Jewish (0.8%).
