The 1911 Census recorded 82 people named Thom in Ireland; roughly one in every 54,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 46 men to 36 women.

Tyrone had the largest share of Thoms, 24.4% (20 people). Next came Antrim (15), Derry (14), Dublin (14) and Down (13).

The average Thom in 1911 was 30.5 years old, 26.2 for men and 35.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Thom literacy in 1911
Of the Thoms whose literacy was recorded, 91.5% could both read and write, 2.4% could read but not write, and 6.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 94.4% reading and writing against 89.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (8), David, John, William and Edward. For women it was Annie (3), followed by Elizabeth, Margaret, Sarah and Anna.

The most common occupation among Thoms was farmer, 17.1% of them (14 people). Next came scholar / student (15.9%), textile worker (7.3%), no occupation / dependent (3.7%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.1% of all Thoms, followed by textiles & clothing, no occupation / dependent and professional.
What religion is Thom?
Most Thoms, 54.9%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (35.4%), Roman Catholic (8.5%) and Baptist (1.2%).
