The 1911 Census recorded 11,655 people named Thompson in Ireland, about 0.266% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 42nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 5,672 men and 5,967 women. (A small number, 16, had no sex recorded.)

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.6% of all Thompsons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.

The largest religious group among Thompsons was Presbyterian, at 37.2%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (34.6%), Roman Catholic (17.2%), Methodist (5.8%) and Unitarian (0.8%).
