The 1911 Census recorded 308 people named Timlin in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 146 men and 160 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

The Timlins were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 74.7% of them (230 people). Next came Sligo (27), Tyrone (27), Dublin (11) and Fermanagh (9).

The average Timlin in 1911 was 32.5 years old, 32.4 for men and 32.4 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Timlin literacy in 1911

Of the Timlins whose literacy was recorded, 73.2% could both read and write, 5.4% could read but not write, and 21.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.2% reading and writing against 69.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Timlin common first names

The most common male names were John (21), Thomas, James, Patrick and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (25), followed by Mary, Catherine, Ellen and Margaret.

The most common occupation among Timlins was farmer, 29.5% of them (91 people). Next came scholar / student (21.4%), farm labourer (2.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.6%) and general labourer (1.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 32.5% of all Timlins, followed by retail & commerce, professional and general labourers.

What religion is Timlin?

Timlins were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.3%).
