Of the Tohills whose literacy was recorded, 75.7% could both read and write, 7.4% could read but not write, and 16.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.8% reading and writing against 67.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.1%), general labourer (6.5%), farm labourer (5.1%) and domestic servant (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.1% of all Tohills, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.

Tohills were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.7%).
