The 1911 Census recorded 268 people named Tolan in Ireland; roughly one in every 16,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 138 men and 130 women.

The average Tolan in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 28.5 for men and 30.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Tolan literacy in 1911
Of the Tolans whose literacy was recorded, 65.7% could both read and write, 6.3% could read but not write, and 28% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 67.4% reading and writing against 63.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (22), James, Patrick, Michael and Daniel. For women it was Mary (24), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Sarah and Annie.

The most common occupation among Tolans was farmer, 26.9% of them (72 people). Next came scholar / student (17.5%), general labourer (3.4%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.6%) and no occupation / dependent (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28.7% of all Tolans, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Tolan?
Tolans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.7%) and Presbyterian (0.4%).
